Notice that the top left tab of the page reads new_page_1.htm. This is a
temporary filename that we'll change when we save the file.
Understanding File Naming
When a user accesses a URL, such as
http://www.iu.edu/
 and doesn't specify a
filename, such as home.htm, the default file of that URL is displayed. The
name of this default file depends on the Web server. Usually the default page
is index.htm or home.htm. When a user tries to access a URL and a default
page does not exist, the Web server may display a list of all the files in the site
or an error message.
Be sure to consider the following guidelines when naming Web files:
Web page file names are generally followed by a .html or .htm extension
Explicitly and consistently define all filename extensions (.htm or .html)
Do not use spaces or special characters (e.g., # or ~)
Name files using a consistent method
Keeping these points in mind, we'll save the home page as
index.htm
.
