There are several options for the location of a Site, which we'll discuss later.
Keep in mind that when creating a Site, FrontPage may create special folders
depending on the Site content.
A blue globe icon identifies a FrontPage Site:
In this workshop, the term Site will be used to refer to a FrontPage Site. As
we work through this workshop, we'll see how a Site helps with site organiza
tion and maintenance.
Understanding Web Architecture
Before we create a Site, it's important to consider Site architecture. There are
several different ways to construct a Site, but we'll use a
hierarchical struc
ture
. This type of structure is composed of one main level with one or more
levels below it. The main level, or
directory
, will contain three .htm files, and
a CSS file that has the styles we apply to the Web site. There will also be links
between the files and one link to an external Web site. FrontPage creates pri
vate and images folders by default. It's important that all the Site files be
saved in one directory to prevent broken links. If a Site will have many files,
it's a good idea to create additional subdirectories for each main category of
the site.
The following image details the hierarchical structure of the Site we'll create
today:
Understanding Disk and Server Based Sites
A
disk based Site
is local in that all the files are saved locally, on the com
puter's hard drive. A
server based Site
resides on a Web server. We'll be
working from a folder on the hard drive, so we'll
initialize
 a disk based Site.
This means that we'll convert an existing folder into a Site and FrontPage will
add various files and folders to manage Site content.
