Choosing a Tool
Web pages are written in a presentation language called
HTML
or
HyperText
Markup Language.
Web browsers read the HTML in a Web document and
display it as a viewable Web page.
There are several different ways to create a Web page. One method involves
using a
text editor
to type code, which requires familiarity with HTML.
Another method is a
WYSIWYG
or
What You See Is What You Get
editor.
This type of program allows users to format a Web page in the same way they
would format a document in a word processing program. As the document is
formatted, WYSIWYG editors generate the required code in the background.
FrontPage brings together elements of text and WYSIWYG editors. It allows
the user to work with a graphical interface while still having access to the
HTML source code. A beginner can use FrontPage to create a basic Web page
without any knowledge of HTML while an advanced user can use FrontPage
to create elaborate and highly sophisticated Web pages.
Today's Project
Today we'll use FrontPage 2003 to create a simple Web site. We'll learn
about a FrontPage Web site and see how to format text using several methods.
We'll insert and format a table and work with images. We'll see how to create
several different types of hyperlinks and a footer. We will also learn about
navigation structure. Finally, we'll see how to update and publish the site we
create.
First let's open FrontPage and learn about the interface.
1.
Open FrontPage using the Start menu or another shortcut.
FrontPage opens in a new window and you see a blank document.
Depending on your computer's settings, you may also see the Task Pane,
which is new to Office XP applications. We won't use it until later in this
workshop so, for now, let's close it.
2.
To close the Task Pane, on the Menu bar,
View, Task Pane
The Task Pane closes.
