Other Canadian public libraries

Brantford Public Library, Ontario

In Brantford, the public library has become a satellite campus of Wilfred Laurier 

University. This example of partnership depends heavily on technology links with the

university and demonstrates how a partnership within the learning sector can benefit 

citizens, to the advantage of other agencies, as well. The work of the Brant FreeNet and

the Brantford Public Library in making the digital age accessible to all is highlighted in

The report

from the National Broadband Task Force includes a number of community based 

 success stories . A cluster of programs at the main library includes the Brant FreeNet,

the Business Self Help Office, the Literacy Council of Brantford and District, and the

Brant Business Information Network.

North Bay Public Library, Ontario

North Bay is 350 kilometres north of Toronto. Paul Walker is the CEO. The library is

heavily involved in the Virtual City Hall Project. North Bay was one of the first councils

to have a website in the early 1990s. It then moved to complaints and suggestions and

then developed a virtual forum. North Bay's population is 56,000, served by one library

with 26 full time staff. Circulation for the past year was 430,000. The library drove the

province's digitisation program, developing classification codes and working closely

with the city's ICT department.

The Blue Sky Project followed. (http://www.blueskyregion.com) This project 

developed a high profile with Industry Canada    Connecting Canadians    which was

developing information portals on a regional basis. As a result, cash came through. The

library acted as lead body, which moved it up  the food chain  in the city. The portal is

currently information based only, with no transactions.
