Skills.net ensures that everybody is able to access the resources of the Internet.
Skills.net has funded community organisations to provide free or affordable Internet
training and access to those Victorians who would not otherwise have such access. The
Skills.net roadshows also provide mobile Internet training around Victoria.
VICNET s staff works in Melbourne and in the Victoria area providing advice,
assistance, and connectivity for community groups, public libraries and the general
public. The services and programs are funded in part by the Victorian government via
Multimedia Victoria (MMV) and the federal government via Networking the Nation
(NTN). VICNET also supports these activities by revenue raised through business
operations. Commercial services include dial up Internet accounts, permanent Internet
accounts such as ADSL and ISDN, training, web hosting, domain registration, as well as
web and database design.
Below are two graphs outlining VICNET's overall and operational budgets. They
show the various revenue streams. In these graphs, access refers to Internet connectivity
products such as dial up, ISDN and ADSL. Miscellaneous refers to web hosting, design,
training and so forth. Eighty percent of VICNET's operational revenue comes from
commercial activities if project management is counted as a commercial business.
The level to which VICNET supports community and library activities varies through
the year and depends on the budget cycle.
VICNET has Victoria s largest Website at http://www.vicnet.net.au. Their Web
servers currently get 10 million hits a month, host over 200 virtual Web servers and host
nearly 2,000 websites for Victoria s community groups.
