E government strategy
The intent of this strategy is to:
encourage the public to access council information online,
reduce the need for individuals and businesses to visit the council to collect or submit
information,
enable access to council services and lodgement of applications online,
support integration of council online service delivery with other governments and
industries.
Examples of what is currently being provided are:
  e tendering,
  dog registration,
  payments of fines,
  water bills,
  transport information.
Library services are involved in this strategy by playing a supporting role to the
community in paying transactions and accessing services online, and building community
capability in carrying out these tasks.
Learning and development strategy
A key component of this initiative is to develop the skills within the Brisbane
community to best use and benefit from new technologies. This implies that the
community has a responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to learning and that it
is undertaken appropriately.
Library services ensure that staff is competent by offering various IT skill programs. LS
plays a key role in the lifelong learning agenda by means of:
Community Internet training at libraries. In 2000/2001 library staff trained 5,500
people.
The seniors training/mentoring program has trained 50 seniors to be mentors for
other seniors learning to use computers. Library services are involved by making
facilities and space available for these one to one training sessions. This model is used
in other places, including Canberra.
The refugee program involves Internet training in the refugees own language using
translators and staff.
