Wireless Computing 

Responses from the open ended question about foundation challenges indicate that 

wireless networking, wireless technology and wireless mobile computing are another 

major concern for foundations. The survey did not collect any data about grantmakers' 

current use of wireless technology.  

Costs of Keeping up with New Technology 

Twenty seven percent of foundation respondents reported they were  leading edge/early 

adopters  of new technology and only 2 percent reported they were  in trouble.  Nearly 

half the foundations reported being  fast followers  and 22 percent reported they were 

 lagging behind  (Table A 3). To help foundations determine their adoption rate 

category, we provided examples for each category based on the primary desktop 

operating system in use at the foundation.
