Lastly, we looked at what technology services funders run in house versus which services
are outsourced. Most (76% to 86%, depending on the service) corporate grantmakers
manage most services in house, including desktop support, LAN and server
administration, e mail, database administration and security. This is different from the
other foundation types, who all reported much higher percentages of outsourcing these
functions. Consistent with other types, corporate grantmakers outsource Web hosting.
You will notice that the percentages differ between what funders reported they manage
in house versus what they outsource. For example, 81 percent of corporate grantmakers
reported that they manage desktop support in house, yet 31 percent reported that they
outsource desktop support, adding up to a total of 112 percent. The variance is due either
to different respondents answering the questions or respondents reporting that they
manage the same function in house and externally.
