IV. Snapshots by Foundation Type 

A. Community Foundations Snapshot 

Up to date Technology Plan (n = 138) 

The amount community foundations are spending on technology and the corresponding 

percentage of the annual operating budget that is comprised of technology expenditures 

varies greatly, with foundations reported spending from less than $1,000 per year on 

technology up to more than $1 million. The majority of community foundations (66%) 

spend between $1,000 and $25,000 annually.  

Annual IT Spending Amount (n = 140) 

Fifteen percent of grantmakers reported that they did not know the percentage of the 

annual operating budgets spent on technology (Table A 5). For those that do know, the 

percentage of the annual operating budget spent on technology ranged from less than 1 

percent to 9 percent. Almost half (48%) of community foundations spend between 1 

percent and 3 percent of the annual operating budget on technology expenses. 

Technology costs include staff salaries, consulting expenses, hardware, software and 

equipment costs, maintenance fees, telecommunications and research and software 

development costs.
