C. Medium Foundations Snapshot ($10 to $49.9 million)

Most medium foundations (86%) are spending between $1,000 and $25,000 annually on 

technology purchases. Not surprisingly, the range is smaller than that of the very large 

and large foundation ranges.  

Annual IT Spending Amount (n = 84)

Twenty percent of grantmakers reported that they did not know the percentage of the 

annual operating budgets spent on technology (Table A 5). For those that do know, the 

percentage of the annual operating budget spent on technology ranged from less than 1 

percent to 10 percent, with most (77%) medium foundations being almost evenly divided 

between  less than 1 percent  and  1 percent to 3 percent.  The technology costs include 

staff salaries, consulting expenses, hardware, software and equipment costs, maintenance 

fees, telecommunications and research and software development costs.
