Grantmakers Information Technology Survey Report
III. Snapshots by Foundation Size
B. Large Foundations Snapshot ($50 to $249.9 million)
There were 81 respondents with assets between $50 and $249.9 million in this snapshot
(Table A 1).
Only 12 percent of large foundations have in house technical support (Table A 2).
Responsibility for technology lies with the finance/administrative staff in half of the
foundations and is outsourced to consultants in 20 percent of the foundations reporting.
Person Responsible for IT (n = 78) *
1 In house technical staff (full or part time)
2 Finance/administrative staff
3 Executive Director/CEO
4 Consultants
6 Other
* n = number of respondents
The primary role and responsibility of the person responsible for information technology
at large foundations is network administration (93%). About 45 percent to 60 percent of
respondents also described the role of technology staff in their organization to include
responsibility for telephone systems, participating in organizational strategic planning
and researching new technologies. Unlike the IT staff at very large foundations, those at
large foundations were less likely to be responsible for sharing knowledge with IT staff in
other organizations, providing assistance and advice to grantees, recommending solutions
to grantees and reviewing technology grant applications.
